Although the most successful outcomes are with both parties in the same room together, we acknowledge that in some situations this is just not possible, or desirable.
It may be that there has been domestic violence in the relationship in the past (this could be emotional and/or psychological as well as physical). It may be that the impact of having both people together would be just too emotional for them to cope with, and would make informed decision-making impossible. But it may be that both parties WANT to mediate.
Arena Mediation can offer a series of meetings called "shuttle" mediation, where neither party meets the other one face to face. Instead, the mediator acts as a "go-between", with the clients usually being in the same building but separate from each other. Direct communication is with the mediator only, and this method is used to define the issues and enable possible solutions to be suggested.
Using this method of mediation takes longer than the more usual face to face negotiations, and is therefore more expensive. However, if a settlement can be achieved in this way it will almost certainly still be cheaper than resorting to using solicitors to negotiate for you. And in terms of emotional cost, may be a much more satisfactory method to reach a settlement.
